Test the tank's temperature and pressure relief valve

Every year, in April.

What to do

Lift the lever on the valve at the top of the tank briefly and let it snap back.

Why it matters

This is the only thing standing between a failed thermostat and a pressure vessel. A stuck valve is worth finding on purpose.

What to look for

  • Water discharges when you lift it, rather than nothing happening
  • It seals again cleanly when released — a valve that keeps dripping after the test needs replacing
  • No rust or water staining on the discharge pipe, which means it has been relieving pressure on its own

Where this comes from

CMHC CE 47, spring. The water that comes out is scalding — stand clear of the pipe.

Catch it while it’s still maintenance.
