Electrical

Test the GFCI outlets

Every year, in April.

What to do

Press TEST on each one. The RESET button should pop out and the outlet should go dead. Press RESET to restore it.

Why it matters

A GFCI protects the bathroom and outdoor outlets, which are the ones near water. They wear out, and a dead one looks identical to a working one.

What to look for

  • The reset button actually pops when you press test
  • The outlet is dead while tripped — check with something plugged in
  • It resets cleanly and holds
  • Any GFCI that will not trip, or will not reset, needs replacing

Where this comes from

Habitat Studio p.24 and CMHC CE 47 both say monthly. Annual is realistic; do it whenever an outdoor outlet stops working, too.

Catch it while it’s still maintenance.

Domisura keeps this schedule for your house — dated to when things went in, and reminding you when each task comes round. The record stays with the address when you sell.
