Heating and cooling

Service the garage heater before winter

Every year, usually in September.

What to do

Book a gas technician to clean and check the heater before the first cold week.

Why it matters

A garage heater burns gas in the room where the car is, a door away from the house. A clean burner and a sound vent keep it running through the cold and keep the combustion where it belongs.

What to look for

  • The burner and igniter cleaned, and a steady blue flame
  • The vent pipe sound, sealed and clear all the way outside
  • The heat exchanger or radiant tube free of cracks, soot and rust-through
  • A combustion and carbon monoxide check at the flue and in the garage

Where this comes from

Modine's Installation and Service Manual for its gas-fired unit heaters (model PDP, Maintenance) says all heating equipment should be serviced before each heating season. Yearly is the manual's own figure, so the nudge and the source agree; September, the same month as the furnace, while technicians are still free.

Catch it while it’s still maintenance.
