What to do
Clean it, fill any cracks, and roll on an acrylic-based sealer on a warm dry stretch.
Why it matters
Sealed asphalt sheds water instead of letting it into the base, and freeze-thaw on a wet base is what breaks a driveway up.

Habitat Studio p.10 — "periodic sealing of the asphalt surface (every two to five years) with an acrylic-based sealant is recommended".
