Repaint or restain the wood siding
Every 5 years, in June.
What to do
Wash it down, let it dry properly, and recoat.
Why it matters
The coating is what stops the siding absorbing water. Once it fails the wood starts going, and replacing siding costs many times what recoating does.
What to look for
- Fading, chalking or colour loss, worst on the south and west walls
- Peeling or blistering, which usually means moisture behind the paint rather than bad paint
- Bare or grey wood showing through
- Splits and open joints that want caulking before anything goes over them
Where this comes from
Habitat Studio p.12 — "will generally require re-painting or staining within five years", sooner on south and west walls and dark colours.
Catch it while it’s still maintenance.
