What to do
Book a sweep. A wood-burning appliance needs this annually; a gas fireplace needs the burner and venting checked rather than swept.
Why it matters
Creosote in a wood flue is what chimney fires are made of. In a gas appliance the risk is a blocked or corroded vent putting exhaust back into the room.
