Foundation
Clear the leaves out of the window wells
Every year, in October.
What to do
Lift out the leaves and debris before freeze-up.
Why it matters
A packed window well holds meltwater against the glass and the foundation, which is how it reaches a basement.
What to look for
- The gravel at the bottom drains rather than holding water
- Leaves and snow packed against the window itself
- The well cover, if there is one, is intact and still sheds water
Where this comes from
Habitat Studio p.10. October before the snow, April before the melt. Retitled and moved to a single autumn pass: ice and snow cannot be removed from a well, so the job is the leaves, and it is done before the ground freezes.
Catch it while it’s still maintenance.
