Clean the HRV core and filters

Twice a year, in October.

What to do

Pull the two filter screens and rinse them, then slide the core out and wash it.

Why it matters

A clogged HRV quietly stops ventilating, which is what was keeping the humidity down. It fails silently — the fan still runs.

What to look for

  • The condensate drain runs free and its trap holds water — a blocked one puts water on the floor

Where this comes from

CMHC says check the filters every two months; Habitat p.27 gives no interval. Six months covers the core; rinse the screens whenever they look grey.

Catch it while it’s still maintenance.
