Clean the dryer vent and duct

Twice a year.

What to do

Pull the duct off the back of the dryer, vacuum it out, and clear the hood outside.

Why it matters

Dryer lint is one of the more common causes of house fires, and a blocked duct makes the dryer run hot for longer on every load.

What to look for

  • Lint packed in the duct, especially at bends
  • The flap on the exterior hood opens freely when the dryer runs
  • Loads taking longer to dry than they used to, which is the first symptom
  • The duct itself — rigid or semi-rigid metal, not the ribbed plastic kind, which is not code and traps lint

Where this comes from

Habitat Studio p.27 says check and clean the exterior vent monthly. Six months for the full duct is the honest compromise; look at the hood outside more often.

Catch it while it’s still maintenance.
