Windows and Doors
Check the weather-stripping and adjust
Every year, in October.
What to do
Close each exterior door on a strip of paper and try to pull it out. Resistance means the seal is working.
Why it matters
Air leakage is heat leaving, and around a door it also carries moisture into the frame.
What to look for
- Daylight visible around a closed door
- Compressed, torn or hardened stripping
- A door that latches too easily — properly adjusted, it should be slightly stiff
- Draughts you can feel on a cold day
Where this comes from
Habitat Studio p.14 — check annually, and petroleum jelly keeps rubber and vinyl flexible. CMHC lists it in fall.
Catch it while it’s still maintenance.
Domisura keeps this schedule for your house — dated to when things went in, and reminding you when each task comes round. The record stays with the address when you sell.
