Windows and Doors
Check the self-closing device on the garage-to-house door
Every year, in October.
What to do
Open the door partway and let go. It should close and latch on its own.
Why it matters
This door is what keeps exhaust from a running car out of the house. The closer is a code requirement, not a convenience.
What to look for
- The door swings shut without help and latches, rather than resting ajar
- The weather-stripping still seals all the way round
- No gap at the threshold you can see daylight through
Where this comes from
Habitat Studio p.14 — the closer and seal exist "to prevent the entry of exhaust gases from the garage into your new home". CMHC checks it in fall.
Catch it while it’s still maintenance.
Domisura keeps this schedule for your house — dated to when things went in, and reminding you when each task comes round. The record stays with the address when you sell.
