Check the garage door opener and its auto-reverse
Every year, in July.
What to do
Lay a length of two-by-four flat under the door and close it. The door should touch, stop, and go back up.
Why it matters
The auto-reverse is the only thing that stops the heaviest moving object in the house from closing on a child.
What to look for
- It reverses on contact rather than pressing down
- The photo eyes near the floor line up and their lights are steady
- Waving something through the beam while it closes stops and reverses it
- The door balances — disconnected from the opener it should stay put halfway
Where this comes from
CMHC CE 47, summer — check the motor, chain, and that the auto-reverse mechanism is properly adjusted.
Catch it while it’s still maintenance.
