Electrical
Check cords and outlets for wear or warmth
Every year, in April.
What to do
Feel the plugs and cords on things that run hot — kettles, heaters, the dryer.
Why it matters
Loose connections heat up before they fail, and heat inside a wall is how an electrical fire starts.
What to look for
- A plug or cord that is warm to the touch in normal use
- Cracked, taped or flattened insulation
- Scorch marks or discolouration at an outlet
- A plug that falls out of the outlet under its own weight
Where this comes from
CMHC CE 47, spring — replace worn cords rather than repairing them.
Catch it while it’s still maintenance.
