Check and clear the deck drains

Every year, in October.

What to do

Clear the drains and scuppers on a membrane deck, and pour a bucket through to see it go.

Why it matters

A membrane deck over living space is a roof, and a roof with a blocked drain is a pond. The membrane is designed to be wet and not to be submerged, and the drain flange is the weakest point in it.

What to look for

  • Leaves, needles or grit over the drain grate
  • Water standing anywhere on the deck an hour after rain
  • A scupper or downspout that runs slowly or not at all
  • Sealant lifting where the drain meets the membrane — this is the joint that leaks
  • Staining on the ceiling of whatever is underneath

Where this comes from

Travelers Canada New Home Maintenance Manual, Appendix G, "Check/clean deck drains" (section 6.15). October, after leaf drop and before anything freezes standing on the deck.

Catch it while it’s still maintenance.
